DON’T SWEAT THE SMALL STUFF
Nothing is built to last forever, including your own strength and stamina, so plan ahead. Move before the going gets tough.
“…it was the best thing I ever did, to tell you the truth. The condo is nice but it was also 30 years old, starting to need little repairs and stuff. And I just found it to be pretty overwhelming…” – Joan Hoffman, resident of The Fountains at Bronson Place
MEET JOAN HOFFMAN, WHO OVERCAME HER FEAR OF CHANGE TO DISCOVER A LIFESTYLE SHE ADORES.
You can learn a lot from someone who has been in your shoes. Their honest insight can help you navigate your way to the place that’s right for you, regardless of which community you choose. (All quotes contained in this post are excerpts from an interview conducted with Joan Hoffman on Wednesday, August 10th, 2016. To read the full, un-edited transcript, please click here.)
Having worked as a nurse and in real estate, Joan has a caring nature and enjoys being around people, something she didn’t have when she lived alone in Northern Michigan. She hadn’t realized how isolated she’d been in her condo. Even though she had plenty of friends, she endured long periods of loneliness and boredom compared to her life at The Fountains. Joan still cooks and drives and enjoys spontaneous shopping trips and lunches with more than a dozen new friends. Joan also attends nearly every outing The Fountains offers to museums, concerts and restaurants. She even loves it when friends stop by and ask her to take their blood pressure!
BECAUSE YOU CAN
The best time to take a step back, take stock and make a plan for your future is today. Nobody knows what tomorrow will bring, so situate yourself in a place where you can enjoy the very best of all the years. Avoid the biggest mistake people make in their retirement years and start exploring your retirement living options right now. “So don’t wait and I think that’s the best advice I can give. I am 78 now and if I waited another three or four years, I
would’ve probably not done this, you know. I would’ve been scared or whatever, but once you start the downsizing and you start seeing what you absolutely need to have, it’s amazing.” – Joan Hoffman
INDEPENDENT NOT ALONE
When Joan moved to The Fountains from Grand Rapids last year, it was not without trepidation. In fact, she might never have done it had it not been for her children’s insistence. She even had some tearful moments when she thought about leaving her friends to be closer to her daughter. In retrospect, however, she’s very glad she listened and persevered. “…the nice part is everything is here. [My daughter] is close by and I’ve made some nice friends and everything. The location is actually perfect for me because I still drive. I’m very active. I go out, I shop. I’m very busy all the time and so I wanted to be independent but not alone.” – Joan Hoffman
WONDERFUL AND WORRY FREE
Joan isn’t the only one enjoying her new worry-free lifestyle. Her kids think it’s wonderful, too. “So it’s the closeness of people here, the friendliness and also the fact that I’m not alone and I’ve got the call bell. I’ve got everything right at my fingertips and, you know, I pick up the phone and call the desk if I need anything or whatever and it’s really a comfort to me because I’m alone. And it’s a comfort to my family, too.”
