START THINKING
It’s never too early to start planning your best future. Find out if retirement community living is right for you.

“There is help, you know, and there’s comfort… We don’t have to worry about our family going out of their way to try to solve our problems.” – Ken Long, resident of The Fountains at Bronson Place

MEET KEN LONG, A KALAMAZOO JUDGE WHO WEIGHED HIS OPTIONS CAREFULLY BEFORE MOVING TO THE FOUNTAINS AT BRONSON PLACE.
You can learn a lot from someone who has been in your shoes. Their honest insight can help you navigate your way to the place that’s right for you, regardless of which community you choose. (All quotes contained in this post are excerpts from an interview conducted with Ken Long on Monday, February 6th, 2017. To read the full, un-edited transcript, please click here.)

A Kalamazoo native and lifelong resident, Ken enjoyed a long and successful career as an attorney and local state court judge. He and his late wife raised three children in the family home they built in 1969. In retirement, they downsized to a condominium and enjoyed traveling near and far. Ken was 83 and widowed when he decided to move to The Fountains. Four years later, his life of leisure is as full as he wishes to make it. He loves sleeping late. He also leads a current events class, plays cards, attends luncheons, has tickets to the symphony and enjoys summer visits to his cabin on Silver Lake.

ARE YOU READY?
No matter how you dice it, age brings change. The good news is, change is nothing to fear when you’ve planned for all the “what if’s.” Moving to the right retirement community at the right time can eliminate all your worries while augmenting your life enjoyment. How you approach the future makes a big difference – not only to your own quality of life, but also to that of your loved ones. Don’t wait to make a plan. “…start thinking, not in terms of, ‘what am I going to do when I can’t take care of myself,’ but instead, ‘how do I want to get ready for that kind of thing and how do I start a life that isn’t going to have to be interrupted by worrying about what is going to happen when I get sick or that kind of thing?’” – Ken Long

DECISION TIME
Ken had come to a crossroads: stay where he was and undertake a lot of maintenance on his dwelling or move into a community where he could enjoy living maintenance free and worry free among friends. “Then I started thinking about what should I do here? Because I knew I had to start working on repairs and upkeep and so on and so forth. That’s when I decided I better start thinking about moving into someplace and of course the only one I was really interested in was the one where I had spent so much time, knew so many people and knew they were still there so this would be a good place for me…” – Ken Long

ATTRACTIVE FEATURES
After comparing all local options, Ken chose The Fountains for its location, its underground garage, its flexible meal plan and its distinct community feel. He’d known many of his new neighbors for years and still keeps in touch with his old neighbors, too. He loves his spacious, two-bedroom apartment overlooking the greenbelt. He cooks whenever he wants to and even has room for guests. “I’m certainly happy. My kids are very happy with it…. They don’t have to rent a hotel somewhere across town to come and visit.” – Ken Long
