Maple Sugar Festival Fun

Residents from The Town Center attended the annual Maple Sugar Festival at the Kalamazoo Nature Center. While still a bit chilly, (it is March in Michigan), we Michiganders considered it a beautiful day–sunny with very little wind and virtually no snow on the ground. The festivities included a tour of the historic DeLano homestead, complete with blacksmithing demonstration and a tour of the 100+ year old DeLano home. A short walk through the trees brought us to the syrup-processing area where we learned about the detailed method of turning raw maple sap into delicious syrup. (Yes, we did sample, and it was delicious).

A stop at the Nature Center pavilion offered the opportunity to sample other maple treats from vendors, including maple cotton candy! From the center we were treated to a guided hike along the nature trails of the property. We learned a lot about native and invasive trees, plants and wildlife from a very knowledgeable biologist acting as our tour guide. What a blessing it was to enjoy the outdoors on such a beautiful “first day on daylight savings time”.
