SHOPPING, COOKING, DOING THE DISHES
Are you tired of repetitive household chores? It’s time you discovered the exciting alternatives Kalamazoo retirement communities offer.
“My whole life revolved around what are we going to eat, when am I going to the store, I have to make a shopping list, then I have to cook, need to eat, have to do the dishes, time to do it all over again.” – Beverly Folz, resident of The Fountains at Bronson Place
MEET BEVERLY AND JOHN FOLZ, MARRIED 54 YEARS AND LOVING LIFE AT THE FOUNTAINS.
You can learn a lot from someone who has been in your shoes. Their honest insight can help you navigate your way to the place that’s right for you, regardless of which community you choose. (All quotes contained in this post are excerpts from an interview conducted with Beverly and John Folz on Friday, February 16th, 2018. To read the full, un-edited transcript, please click here.)
A Kalamazoo native, John attended Western Michigan University and served in the Air Force from 1943 through 1945. His wife, Beverly, hails from Oklahoma and attended the University of Oklahoma. She thought Kalamazoo only existed in a song when she secured a corporate communication job with Upjohn and made it her home. That’s when she met and married John. They raised two children, enjoyed skiing and canoeing and lived in the same house for 40 years before downsizing to a condo. When planning their next move, they seriously considered two options. While they had more friends living at another community, they chose The Fountains, preferring its park-like setting and vibrant community life. Avid travelers, Beverly also loves reading, movies, exercising and Bridge while John favors walking, swimming and Ping-Pong.
As John and Beverly Folz learned from a friend’s experience, it’s important to think ahead, do your research and make a plan for how you will live your best life moving forward. “An elderly friend who lived alone became extremely ill, very suddenly and could no longer manage her affairs. Both of her children, of whom we are very fond, live far away, as do both our kids. We saw how traumatic and exhausting it was for them to deal with their mother’s medical and emotional care while having to sell her home, get all of her belongings and move her. She was very unhappy with her move. We said right then that we would never put our children through that, so we decided to start thinking about our future while we were still healthy.” – Beverly Folz
ATTRACTIVE GROUNDS AND VIBRANT COMMUNITY LIFE
John and Beverly were perfectly happy living in their condo, nevertheless they wanted to secure their future while they were still able, so their kids would never be burdened. After carefully researching two options back and forth, The Fountains won their hearts with a two-bedroom apartment nearly as large as their condo. They snatched it up and added all new finishes, too. With two meals per day provided, Beverly is free to enjoy Watermark University classes like Fitness and Reminiscent Writing. “Every time we came back here, we just enjoyed driving into the beautiful grounds and feeling like it was a park instead of a parking lot.” – Beverly Foltz
FUN IN THE SNOW AND SUNSHINE
Active, independent and on the go, John and Beverly attend movie nights and even enjoyed a group outing to see Hamilton in Chicago. This winter, they thawed out for two weeks on the sunny shores of Mexico. When local weather is inclement, they appreciate the convenience of taking the elevator down to their car, safe from the elements in the underground garage. “It’s just nice to have your car warm and ready to go when you get in it and not to have to go out in the snow to get to it.” – John Folz, resident of The Fountains at Bronson Place
