Residents John and Margaret VanderPloeg are Enjoying New Friendships at The Fountains

Adult children respect parents who take charge of their own future. It’s a trait worth passing down.

“Our children have been very, very pleased that we have made this decision on our own and that we are enjoying it.” – Margaret VanderPloeg, resident of The Fountains at Bronson Place

You can learn a lot from someone who has been in your shoes. Their honest insight can help you navigate your way to the place that’s right for you, regardless of which community you choose. Margaret is a Kalamazoo native and John moved here as a teen. Married now for 63 years, they raised their three children here. Having started a successful family business 54 years ago, John and Margaret are no strangers to taking charge of their own future. One daughter has since taken over the business and John and Margaret are presently enjoying their well earned retirement lifestyle at The Fountains at Bronson Place. They still attend the same church and enjoy dining out with friends, just as they always have. However, now that they are no longer caring for their home and yard, they have time to enjoy all of their new opportunities and new friends at The Fountains. Had they not moved when they did, they say they would have never met many of their current friends, a benefit that has enriched their lives immeasurably.

Say hello to your best future. Start exploring the possibilities today. “I personally think that people fail to know what life is like at a community like The Fountains. They think in their minds of a nursing home and that seems repulsive to them. And they just have no idea what life is really like at The Fountains or perhaps other senior communities where there are so many options for a lifestyle. If you want to be very private you can do so, if you want to be involved in activities, if you want to be part of a committee, the Resident’s Council, if you want to take advantage of field trips, of dining trips outside, there are so many things to do and those opportunities are made available to us in a way that is very convenient for us.” – John VanderPloeg, resident of The Fountains at Bronson Place

Caring for their multi-story home and yard had become quite a chore for John and Margaret so they started exploring their options. Without even consulting their children, they selected The Fountains for its appealing location, generous apartment sizes and numerous conveniences including underground parking. “John has a sister who is in a senior community here in Kalamazoo. She is a widow and she has to park outside and in the winter time in Michigan she said, ‘I don’t really care to go out at all because I can’t get my car cleaned up from the snow and I’m not wanting to dig out everything so I just stay in.’ Well, we don’t have that problem here.” – Margaret VanderPloeg

Thinking positively about the future is not a mindset reserved exclusively for the young.
